Reasons We Declined the Offer to Write a Book Using AI (And Why You Shouldn’t Either)

About a month ago, we were approached by a potential client who wanted to see if it was possible to assist in the creation of an entire book using artificial intelligence (AI) in such a fashion that when the book was complete, the author could publish it as their own work.

The reasoning behind the request was that it would allow the requestor to complete the work much quicker than the conventional method, thus saving them money. What is the sense in not wanting your book to be produced for a fraction of the cost of the conventional method? We, however, declined. While we support innovative technology, we are not interested in going down this road.

We would like to make it clear why we have made this decision and how it can relate to you if you want to self-publish a book in 2026.

Table of Contents

1. AI Cannot Express Your Real Value

In order for the AI to properly assess the value of you as a writer, it would need to have access to the value that you provide as a writer and all the data that quantifies that value. The issue is that the majority of the value that you provide will not be captured in your documentation and, therefore, you will not be aware that there are things that are important to the end result. A human ghostwriter will make the time during the interviewing process to be able to assess the value that you provide as a writer. This will be done by asking you questions that require tactical response, paying attention to things that you mention in passing that are significant, and paying attention to the “ah ha” moments of brilliance that you might not have captured in your data.

Since the AI has no context regarding how unique you are as a writer, it will not be able to find the hidden gems of value that you provide.

2. You Will Lose Your Voice

From our experience and reviewing many hundreds of books written by AI programs, what we have consistently found is that AI will default to a voice that is more generic and produces writing that does not truly represent how you sound as a person, nor does it produce the same type of communication that you would use when writing for a book.

Thus, all of your humor will be missing, your personality will not be able to be identified, and your way of explaining things in a unique manner will be translated into a corporate/organizational manner.

Authenticity is what draws readers to authors. Because AI doesn't have the exact thought process or communication style as you do, AI will never be a true representation of how you view the world or communicate your ideas. Although AI technology is capable of finding patterns in data, it cannot replicate your true self.

3. You Have No Copyright

This is what shocks people the most.

According to the United States Copyright Office's ruling, AI-produced work cannot claim copyright protection.

What does this mean in real life?

It means somebody else can take your AI-produced book, publish it in their name, and you will have NO legal recourse against them. They can SELL it or GIVE it away or MODIFY it in any way, and you have NO way of stopping them.

You've spent MONTHS and probably THOUSANDS of dollars (on AI tools and editing) writing the book, and you have the potential to lose that ownership completely.

Is saving money upfront worth losing all rights to ownership?

4. Publishers Will Reject It

Most large publishers automatically reject a manuscript produced by an AI program, regardless of whether it has a good topic or good quality.

The reason why they do this is because they understand what we are saying here: An AI-generated product does not reflect the depth, feeling, or copyright protection of traditionally published material.

If you want to get a traditional publishing contract, you won't be able to do that if you use AI writing technology.

There Is a Difference between Human Writers & AI Writers.

Readers can identify when they’re reading something written by an AI, so much so that many readers refuse to read AI written books altogether because they are not as good as those written by humans.

AI is often technically correct—but the feel of the writing is off. Repeated themes are typically written by AI and it almost always repeats paragraphs once they run out of things to say.

If you had to build a professional reputation on content that your readers easily recognize as being produced by an AI, would that be the right choice?

Where AI Fails as a Writing Partner.

Now let's take a closer look at how AI is not a good writing partner compared to a Human Writing Partner (Ghostwriter).

Understanding The Topic Through Conversations

When human ghostwriters interview their author clients, they ask probing questions to help ensure that there will be enough original content created with the target audience in mind.

For example: If your example was that you solved your company's biggest crisis using a non-traditional approach, and at some point you moved on from that because "I am just problem solving.".

A Human Ghostwriter would likely stop you right there and say, "Wow! Tell me more about that." and all of a sudden you have told a story that could be a major chapter in your book, which an AI would miss completely.

Lack Of Emotional Intelligence Or Context

AI lacks emotional intelligence and cannot relate to people in the same ways as Humans can. Ghostwriters:

A human ghostwriter listens to cues and picks up on what you're hinting at, have said, or are hoping someone will ask about.

The Voice Match/Adaptation

A professional human ghostwriter can determine when to slow down, rush through information, build tension, and change focus, which is a choice a machine cannot make.

Identify Your Unique Value

AI can write a well-written book but it has no way of knowing what is unique about your specific perspective and the thousands of other books

 on the same subject.

A Book Is Not All About Your Knowledge But How You Process The Knowledge You Have! This is what your readers will remember you for!

Quality Control/Truth Checking

AI has no ability to tell you what is true and has, therefore, created multiple instances of misinformation due to hallucinated facts, invented sources, and represented those facts with confidence.

Human ghostwriters check sources, verify claims and ensure facts are accurate.

Copyright Problems No One Talks About

The Copyright Office in the United States has made a ruling on AI created products, and that ruling is that a product created by a machine is not protected.

Your Book Scenario

You write your business book using AI to write the book. You publish the book. People start to hear about it.

You see an entire chapter copied by a competitor and they begin to use that chapter to sell their consulting services: when you call your lawyer and ask how to stop them, they say there’s nothing you can do because there is no copyright protection for the AI-created material.

The Practical Effect of AI-Created Content

Beyond the legal ramifications of this situation, think about whether or not you would want to be considered a credible source. Most literary awards will not consider anyone who did not create the content themselves as an author. Also, any academic scholar would not use research that was created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a basis for their sources, which would lead to a complete dismissal of your work by an academic scholar. Journalists also tend to avoid interviewing the authors of AI created works, and event planners typically only want to book authentic thought leaders.

Your book is your business card. Is this worth the risk?

Reasons Why Publishers Reject AI Created Books

While we touched on this before, here’s why publishers continue to reject such works:

Quality Control: Publishers know that most of the time the writing produced by AI is bland and has no soul, meaning it does not engage the reader. They do not want to damage their brand identity or their customer relationships.

Market Saturation: Every publisher’s market is oversaturated with low-quality AI created works, so, they are fighting an uphill battle in the creation of a reputation with their customers.

Copyright Liability: Publishers also understand that by publishing an AI created profit, they put their entire catalogue at risk for future copyright litigation.

long-term author relationships

The Reader's Experience: AI vs Human

AI has come a long way and is no longer obviously different from a human writer when it comes to producing written material. Why can't the average reader tell the difference?

The Uncanny Valley of Writing

AI uses many variations of the phrase "not only this but also that", consistently adding to the feeling that they are writing unnatural language.

The Narrative Arc

AI lacks the ability to build real tension, craft meaningful pacing, or create compelling narrative arcs.

A-ha Moments

Great non-fiction books have moments when things just click together, which can't happen with AI because it doesn't actually understand the ideas it is writing about.

Repetition And Redundancy

Long-form writing by AI results in AI having nothing meaningful to say. This means that AI simply takes what has been written in earlier paragraphs and reproduces it elsewhere or invents new text.

A Real-World Case Study: When AI Fails.

Remember the client we told you about? They did not listen to what I told them the first time.

Event recap.

The client found someone who was willing to use AI to write the material for their book for a small fraction of the amount of money that I was going to charge them. The book was "completed" after three weeks.

How did the book turn out? Although it was technically written well from a grammar perspective, it lacked personality, had no unique insights, included factual inaccuracies, and used generic examples instead of real-life client experiences.

The Costly Mistake

Three months later, the client came back realizing that having an AI-generated book would be detrimental to their brand image and wanted to have it rewritten by us.

What did we tell them? In terms of cost, it would be the same price to rewrite it as to start fresh. You cannot take AI-generated content and make it authentic.

Instead, they decided to re-engage our human-based ghostwriting team for a brand new project. The overall cost would be three times what they initially paid for an AI-generated book, as well as losing three months of time.

What have we learned? If you want something that is cheap and fast, do not do it twice

Our Philosophy at Rolling Authors

At Rolling Authors, we do not utilize AI in our writing process at all.

To determine whether you should use AI or human ghostwriters to produce your written content, there is a simple rule of thumb - if you cannot tell which parts were created by an AI system as opposed to human, then you are no longer using AI to "assist" on your writing project; you have crossed over to the "generated" category of writing.

When deciding whether to choose AI or human ghostwriters to produce your content, consider the following factors.

Choose AI

You need written content quickly; quality and authenticity are not high priorities; you are creating internal company documents; and you are not concerned with copyright protection.

Choose Human Ghostwriters

You are writing a book to develop thought leadership; your reputation is on the line based on the quality of the content; you are building a personal brand; you are using traditional publishing; you want the content to accurately represent your point of view; you are concerned with copyright protection; you want your readers to emotionally connect with your writing.

Investment Perspective

Think about your book being a representation of you as a person; your business for pitching; your résumé; and how you shake hands all combined into one piece of material. Is this something you want to automate?

Ask Yourself:

What is the purpose of your book? What if your book turns out to be mediocre? What is the value of your name?

Based on your answers to these questions, if you see your answers leaning towards "this book is very important," consider investing in a human writer.

The Future of Ghostwriting in the AI Era

Here is our prediction for 2026 and beyond: the market for writing services will be divided into two categories.

The lower tier market will receive an overwhelming amount of economic AI-generated content. Most of the content will face rejection. The content will not establish enduring credibility.

More Valuable Human Content

The premium human-written content will become more valuable than all other content. The ability to stand out requires human creativity.

The "Human Premium"

Authors who dedicate their resources toward genuine human ghostwriting services will achieve superior status.

When people evaluate food they see two categories. The existence of mass production makes original products become more valuable.

Verification Will Matter

The future will bring human-written badges that enable users  to identify AI-generated text. Literary awards will need human authorship verification before granting awards. Readers will start actively searching for content that does not include AI. The verified human content will be sold at its highest price.

Our Commitment

AI will never be used by us to write your book. We do not fear technology. We know your actual purchase includes our skills to analyze data and create your unique voice through storytelling.

Final Thoughts: What's Really At Stake

The client expected us to write their book using only AI which they actually proposed to us. Their unique voice would vanish because they wanted to create content which all people would understand. The copyright protections for their work would vanish. The product which they created would not meet publisher standards. All readers would identify the created content as fake. The material which they created would damage their professional image.

The book has your name on the cover. Your credibility will be judged by how well it's written.

You cannot pretend to possess expertise. You cannot create authentic experiences through automation. You cannot use AI as a shortcut to thought leadership.

The Bottom Line

AI functions as a tool which supports human expertise but does not substitute for it. The system helps users create research materials and document outlines and perform editing tasks. The system cannot perform these functions:

The system cannot determine your distinctive abilities. The system cannot reflect your genuine speaking style. The system cannot generate inquiries which will help you reach your most valuable discoveries. The system cannot establish emotional links which will make books stand out to readers. The system cannot create copyright-protected content. The system cannot establish your standing as a trustworthy expert.

The AI system can create your book through its writing capabilities. Many agencies will. We choose not to work in that manner because we recognize you intend to create a book which shows your true knowledge and establishes your trustworthiness.

Do you want to create an honest book which establishes your expertise?

At Rolling Authors, we write your book through detailed interviews which let us extract your knowledge until we create a manuscript that shows your authentic speaking style.
