Why Romantasy Is the Hottest Genre of 2026 — And What That Means for Your Book

You may have already envisioned an entire fantasy world in your subconscious mind. You may also be thinking of your female protagonist who has special abilities and uses a sword. You have a crisis point for your romantic interest, who at first dislikes the heroine but later grows to like her, and you've now created a world where a court would thrive on an abundance of intrigue, magical beings, and many other dangers lurking in its shadowed corners.

Unfortunately, numerous obstacles may arise once you actually start writing. For example, your pacing may be off, your romantic elements may not be satisfying enough for the reader, or it may just come off as something readers have read before. Therefore, you must understand that it is about more than just telling a romance in a fantasy world; it also requires understanding current marketplace trends in tropes, where they fit into an overall story arc, and what fantasy readers consider appealing.

In terms of statistics, fantasy romance is not a short-term trend. Romantasy was a massive hit in 2023-2024 and continues to grow in 2026. In 2023, the Romantasy genre had sales of $454 million, while in 2024, the numbers increased to over $610 million — an unprecedented jump! Rebecca Yarros’ “Onyx Storm” sold over one million copies in the first week of release, establishing a new record for book sales.

In 2024, the first nine months showed a 62% increase in the number of fantasy genre books sold. The surge has been attributed largely to BookTok, where one video can lead to increased sales of anywhere from 500% to 800% . If you have been thinking about writing a book, now is the time!

How Romantasy is Different

Romantasy is more than just fantasy with a romantic subplot. The main difference between Romantasy and traditional fantasy books is that romance is what drives the main character’s growth throughout the story.

Therefore, without romance, there would be no story.

Consequently, to create a satisfying conclusion to a story, the three story arcs must include: a) a fantasy story arc; b) a romance story arc; c) a protagonist character growth story arc. All three arcs must come together at the end. The buildup of these story arcs creates anticipation and momentum for all three arcs. The connection between a fantasy story and a romance story within the same work of fiction helps create not only anticipation and excitement between the two characters, but it also creates additional anticipation and excitement for how the romance will impact the overall fantasy story.

Top 2026 Tropes on the Bestseller List include:

1. Enemies Who Become Lovers

Two characters have been at odds with each other but are unable to stop thinking about one another. If they move closer to one another, does that make them weak? If they have a softening period, would that be viewed as disloyal?

2. The Use of Fate and Prophecy as Conflict Developments

A connection between soulmates through fate, prophecy, or soul bond creates a high degree of tension before they agree to be together. Upon meeting, the two characters will struggle to accept the existence of their connection as long as they desire free will in a world where the outcome is preordained. When they finally come to accept their connection, the acceptance becomes even more rewarding because it is an act of free will.

Note to the writer: Never force your characters to be passive; if both characters simply accept their relationship, there will be no conflict and therefore no story. Provide your characters with compelling motivations to resist the connection, and make sure the costs of resisting are high.

3. Forbidden Love

Romantasy does not suggest that if your parents dislike your lover, that is the end of the world, but instead shows how far the fantasy world can go in order to bring two people together against all odds.

4. Forced Proximity

What do you get when you put two people who absolutely do not get along in a space that has only one bed, and they have the same quest, and they can't leave? You force the proximity to cause all of the other things to happen sooner, because when you force two people who share the same space to share their feelings, they become vulnerable to the emotions of the other, become intimately involved with the other person without intending to do so, and before they realize it, they will not be able to separate the hate they had for each other for all those years from love.

2026 Trend: Currently, many readers are enjoying books that feature forced proximity within institutions (military school, schools of magic, competitions between cultures) because there is both physical proximity and outside conflict occurring at the same time.

5. Dark Love Interest or Protector of Your Heart?

A defining moment for this trope in the BookTok community occurs when the character who has been emotionally damaged asks, "Who did this to you?" At this point, the feelings of this damaged character reach a critical mass (meaning that the raw feelings now represent the emotions of the entire chain of events associated with the relationship). Emotionally charged by the physical abuse of his/her significant other, the damaged character loses all control, submits themselves completely to the protective instincts they now possess for their significant other, and then the reader feels as though they will do whatever it takes to protect the significant other.

6. Court Intrigue

Palace grounds, balls, and political arenas create elements of court intrigue by weaving romance and betrayal and using power plays between individuals. Due to this balance of power, every conversation has two meanings, every dance is a negotiation, and every glance has meaning.

The purpose of the narrative in this instance is to provide an external representation of the couple's internal conflict. When they trust each other in a world that rewards betrayal, that moment is a true act of love.

7. Found Family

Although often treated as a secondary theme, found family provides a considerable amount of structural work. The romance between the two will carry more weight because they either become a found family or the protagonist has to earn his or her way into it. It is not merely the selection of two people, but a choice to belong.

Additionally, found family provides a context for the "dark" love interest to demonstrate his or her true softness and thus make that character more believable.

Creating a Romance and a Story

Romantasy stories have a three-act plot structure, and both elements exist as individual arcs but must still be connected to create an interesting and satisfying reading experience. The most common error is to have one of the stories (Heart vs. Blade) overpower or dominate the other.

Act One: You want to take this opportunity to show us who your main character really is as a person (i.e., before falling in love) and what she desires and fears (other than her romantic interest). Show us the external conflict that drives the character, and place all of the romantic tension and attraction. Establish your character's internal wound (belief/fear) that will stop them from being able to open up to a new relationship unless confronted.

Act Two: This is also where you will see your writing elements at their best — both characters start to actively take part in the relationship instead of just falling into it. The midpoint in your action plan will be your pivot point, right before the beginning of the buildup to the dark moment of your overall plot, which will include the major revelation of your story and the major impact of this event on your love interest.(Note: Your dark moment won't work unless you have established a valid romantic relationship before the dark moment occurs.)

Act Three: Your external conflict (fantasy conflict) and internal conflict (romantic conflict) must end at the same time. The most satisfying conclusion to this story will be achieved when the characters grow as individuals and become who they needed to be for each other in order to resolve each character's internal conflict, along with the external conflict of the fantasy plot.

Make sure that the interwoven relationships of both characters develop and are created in such a way that they complement and/or add to the overall plot of the story as a whole. The connection between the primary character's journey and the love connection between them isn't merely an afterthought in the fantasy, but rather an essential part of the story that allows the author to present a tale that mirrors real life.

The dual-arc test for romantic fantasy contains some very simple questions: In addition to answering what the moment means regarding the overall conflict in the story, how does it affect the romantic relationship? When both arcs progress through every single scene in the book, the overall flow and pacing of the story become fast-paced and exciting.

Why Readers Find Romantasy Compelling

Though BookTok is not directly responsible for creating the audience for romantasy, it has shown that there has been an audience for this type of romantic fantasy all along.

Romantic fantasy has a very different psychological effect from other types of fantasy. It generally provides an escape from reality while also containing elements of sincere emotion. After reading a romantic fantasy, the reader can experience a world of dragons, witches, and prophecies while simultaneously going on an emotional roller coaster as they experience heartbreak and healing.

Most romantic fantasy novels have some sort of fantasy setting, which tends to magnify emotions rather than provide distance between readers and the emotional experience they are reading about.

A significant portion of the books in this genre have a female protagonist learning to find her power, while the male love interest typically finds that power before she does and loves her because of her strength. The romance in romantic fantasy supports the female character becoming more empowered rather than less empowered.

Add to that the viral moments (the 'screenshot scene,' the quote that breaks the reader's heart in 17 words, etc.). All of these elements continue to contribute to the excitement readers feel for romantic fantasy and will cause an explosion in this genre in the very near future. There are rarely just plot moments; there are emotional moments, which develop as part of the overall story arc leading up to the massive viral moment. It is only because the reader has invested anticipation in what happens before this concluding event that readers react so strongly when the viral moment actually happens.

Characteristics of the Most Distinguishable Romantasy Stories

The best stories create character transformation by using the magic system to help demonstrate the emotional transformation of the protagonist. An example is A Court of Thorns and Roses, where the curse that lies at the centre of the Spring Court is intertwined with the romantic storyline. The protagonist's way of removing the curse is based on her emotional growth as a character. The fantasy world in which these stories take place is not simply the environment where the action happens; ultimately, it becomes a "living being" with an opinion about the relationship.

When the slow-burn story is sufficiently built up, there are small, measurable increments of character progress, with readers seeing the main character's development even when it may appear to be a step backward. In this example, the progress would not necessarily be the two main characters moving physically closer together; rather, progress from the reader's perspective would be learning something new about how and why the main characters belong together.

If You Have a Romantasy in Your Mind

The number one reason writers stop writing is due to a lack of ability to express how their stories fit together. There is a difference between what we imagine a story to be and what we create as authors. That gap is a reality, but it is not due to a lack of imagination. A novel is a large, complex creation to put together, and you need both artistic instinct and intellect to design its structure.

At Rolling Authors, we support business founders, entrepreneurs, and creative visionaries in telling their own unique tales; we are strong believers in the connection between craft and collaboration. If you have a romantic epic story in your mind, there is a world you want to create, with a heroine and a gloomy romantic interest who has a deep backstory that makes you want to weep!

Your story is meant to be! Even if you merely have a few pages or 300 ideas, Rolling Authors has the experience to help you turn those ideas into a romance novel that readers will recommend on BookTok.
