Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children is a novel written about a boy born at the moment when India became independent. This novel won the Booker Prize and was later selected for the Booker of Bookers. In 2018, Amitav Ghosh was the first Indian author to receive the Jnanpith Award for his works in English. The three volumes can be read together, but are standalone as well. Jhumpa Lahiri's first book of short stories, Interpreter of Maladies, has sold over 15 million copies and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. This was a tremendous accomplishment for a first-time author. Lahiri writes about the unique experience of being between two cultures but experiencing intense feelings of loneliness due to this cultural displacement. Her must-read is Interpreter of Maladies.
Aravind Adiga's novel, The White Tiger, is the 2008 Booker Prize winner. It has now been made into a Netflix movie. The White Tiger is a dark humour novel that portrays the extreme division of social classes in modern-day India through a straightforward story full of revelations and moral imperatives. It is a must-read.
Amish Tripathi revitalised Hindu scriptures and mythological tales as commercial fiction through his Shiva Trilogy, starting with The Immortals of Meluha, published in 2010. He became the fastest-selling author in Indian publishing history.
Chetan Bhagat, no matter what critics say, convinced an entire generation of young Indians to begin reading fiction. Shashi Tharoor is a politician, diplomat, and writer who has published a large body of work. Tharoor's book "Inglorious Empire" is considered to be an essential text in the worldwide dialogue about the British Empire's colonial rule over India, and his first book, "The Great Indian Novel," won the Commonwealth Writers Prize. Read at least: Inglorious Empire.
Khushwant Singh is a journalist, editor, and novelist in India whose 1956 work "Train to Pakistan" addresses the horror of the 1947 partition and is one of the most acclaimed books on this subject.
