Maria Cayre, Founder of BuyFlow.ai, on Choosing Direction Over Certainty

When I was 18 years old, I left home to pursue my goal of studying astronomy and follow my passion for pure science. I developed a love for science and mathematics, long nights in pursuit of knowledge, and a desire to unlock the secrets of the universe.
At the end of my studies, I discovered something about myself that was uncomfortable: the realization that I was not going to spend my life staring at the end of a telescope.
My father's family had been generational entrepreneurs and I had been raised to know what a business was and what it represented. This was the driving force behind my next big decision: to leave academic pursuits and pursue a career in business.
I can vividly recall the dizzying feelings of being so close to finishing, the sense that the years I had spent in school amounted to nothing, but I knew that if I stayed in school, it would be out of pride rather than a passion for the subject.
So I opted to change directions by studying economics. After four years, I graduated with a new belief: the choice to change direction is an honest decision, not a failure.
I have spent time working as an economist and have been involved with various transportation and logistics projects throughout Latin America. One thing I learned while working on the Panama Canal project was, “It is only when logistics fail that we see how important they are.”
As a result of this experience, I devoted myself to serving the government of Argentina.
In 2019, I was appointed Secretary of State at Argentina’s Ministry of Production, where I learned just how dependent small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are on logistics.
Upon leaving the government, I began working on building solutions rather than diagnosing issues, which led me to create Klozer. It is a tech-enabled fulfillment and logistics company, which utilizes technology to provide SMEs in Argentina with a way to make their operations quicker, easier to manage, and more predictable.
Then came artificial intelligence (AI), and that brought back the same feeling I had when I saw the impact logistics had on our global economy. And I realized that once again, we must adapt.
So I made another courageous decision: I sold Klozer — fully, deliberately — not as an exit, but as a commitment. To build what I believed was next. I withdrew from my role as operations director, and with the freedom that decision created, I built BuyFlow.ai. BuyFlow makes use of artificial intelligence agents to help small and medium enterprises across Latin America (LATAM) automate their purchasing and procurement.
I've learned something fundamental about entrepreneurship: there is no linear path to success as an entrepreneur – rather, you must make a series of courageous decisions.
