Sabrina Gans: From a Life Saved by Care to Building SharyCo Around Impact

I went through early life owing my existence to the touch of another human being.
At 7 months of gestation (just over 1.5 kg), I was born prematurely with 20% odds of survival. When all hope was lost, my parents took me home. They converted their bedroom into an incubator. The neighbors lent space heaters—the goal was for my mother to maintain skin-to-skin contact with me for 24 hours a day.
As a result of the positive hormonal response to her holding me, I survived.
Years later, I followed a logical path. I earned an undergraduate degree in business and began my career in corporate America.
On the surface, everything appeared correct. However, something did not feel right within me.
While I was living in Mexico City, my nephew was born with glycogenosis, a genetic defect characterized by abnormally low glucose levels, that can lead to brain damage or even death without constant medical supervision. My sister had the money to purchase a glucose sensor that activated an alarm when glucose levels decreased, allowing immediate intervention.
I met another child who also had the same disease, but the mother couldn't afford the sensor. One night, his blood sugar levels dropped, and he suffered irreversible neurological damage while sleeping. There was no notification, and no one was there to save him.
At that moment, something broke inside me. The difference between living a full life and living a tragedy is nothing more than money—small pieces of coloured paper.
That day, I quit my corporate job. I decided my mission would be to create a new type of currency, one based on creating positive impacts.
SharyCo helps companies create habits around sustainability by employing gamification techniques, challenges, and tangible rewards - driving engagement, cultural change and measurable impact.
Companies are what we are starting with, but the ultimate goal is still the same: to give people access to what they need, not because of their bank account, but because of the positive impact they create.
Change always comes from the people.
