How Kinjal Shah Built Shwas Charitable Trust by Choosing a Classroom Over Comfort

As a biomedical engineer by training, I spent most of my time as an engineer designing solutions. However, entering a classroom as a teacher was the greatest redirection toward my life's mission.

I founded Shwas Charitable Trust, but my journey started with a paradigm shift.

As I began teaching children from underserved communities, I was faced with some stark realities. While one group of children were vying for clearing college entrance exams to shape their career, there was another group trying to learn how to read the letter A in the alphabet.

Those contrasting realities will always remain with me and drive me forward.

Fifteen years ago, I only knew that I wanted to teach underserved children - without any funding, team, or plan for implementing what I desired. I knew that education can change people's lives.

Thus, my journey had some significant hurdles along the way.

Many times, I had to establish trust with the communities in which I was trying to start educational programmes, find volunteers, obtain funding, and convince people that investing in education was worthwhile. I experienced self-doubt, financial difficulties, and more challenges along the way than I would have ever thought were possible.

But each challenge strengthened my resolve.

Shwas Charitable Trust started out as an idea and grew into an organisation that strives to provide opportunities to children who need it most. Shwas currently operates 50+ learning centres in Gujarat and Rajasthan and provides education, life skills, digital literacy, career guidance, and developmental support to over 5,000 children.

Even though I've built a large organisation with staff and centres, my greatest accomplishments are not quantifiable such as - watching our learners graduate from college, seeing young girls advance in their education rather than being pushed into early marriages, and cheering on kids when they tell me that they want to be an engineer, teacher, artist, or entrepreneur - earlier they used to have trouble reading.

I never built the empire with bricks and mortar; it was built on hope, trust, the collective goodwill of teachers, volunteers, donors, supporters, and all the kids who took a chance on a better future.

If I learned anything from my journey, it is that you don't need extraordinary resources to create extraordinary results. All you need is the courage to start, the patience to keep going, and the commitment to show up.

With our sights set high, we are determined to expand our reach to 10,000 kids in the next couple of years!
